Castles and Carriages

Castles and Carriages are perfect for that little princess! This fabric collection was really hard to show off. I ended up taking these pictures with my camera and making a few collages so you can really see all the possibilities.

This is actually a 24 inch panel, which I made into a collage...

This is really a stack of great fabrics for a LilyandEbony dress...

I cut the panel and used bits and pieces of it here and there, to make the front and back aprons.

I added some swarski crystals on the crowns for a little BLING!

If only I had a little more time, I would make samples of every fabric collection I buy for the AllegroFabrics Shop. This little set is made from Nicey Jane by Heather Bailey. It's a huge collection with prints of all sizes, so it was difficult to choose...and this little model is such a petite little one! I made the set in a size 2. I have decided to make a custom sized one under the LilyandEbony label. I have it listed on Ebay, with many other pictures for you to look at. Speaking of those pics, I think the photography is amazing! It was probably about 50 degrees that day, too. Seattle weather is like winter all year long!

My Last Day at Quilt Market

I took advantage of every minute, buying patterns to make samples, meeting with fabric reps to make AllegroFabrics selections, and having my website analyzed. I loved Anna Maria Horner's Booth...full of color and inspiration, and of course, beautiful pics of her kids....How does she do it all..........

I found some very interesting new patterns...This one from Oliva Ann Designs, looks difficult, but is not...great for using fat quarters, and comes with the cute leggings patterns, too.

What to do with a very long zipper....

Just for fun I had my AllegroFabrics Website analyzed. It got a score of 98.3! It was the highest of anyone at the market and I was over the top HAPPY. I got some good advice on how to improve it...maybe in Houston I will get a perfect score!

Oh my Goodness!!!!! First I would like to say that I am totally awed by the number of comments for the AllegroFabrics $20.00 gift certificate giveaway. I am going to offer another $20.00 if we reach 200 comments by Sunday night. I am reading every single comment and enjoying all of the positive remarks from all of you!

Today at Quilt Market many presenters gave sneak peeks of their new lines, showed tons of cool samples and offered tutorials. They call this event SchoolHouse. It was hard to pick and choose which sessions to attend.

This is the newest line from Pillow and Maxfield. This delightful creative duo designs for Michael Miller. I sold out their collection very quickly last fall and I know this one will go fast as well. They offer a few colors ways and one is perfect for holiday. Their samples are so eye catching! What do you think?

I am always looking for new kids patterns and this in particular from Amy Butler is perfect! It's a simple to make hooded raincoat, perfect for all of the laminates that are coming out. This is one of her own patterns and I will be buying it for sure...An you can bet that LilyandEbony will sew up a few samples!

Here is a very interesting sample of Princess Bella Pattern from Izzy and Ivy. This is made using Australian Aboriginal fabrics from a line that I am highly considering buying into...these are MILD prints compared to the majority they create...It's just such a stunning dress in these lovely prints. I do not know if Izzy and Ivy has any NEW patterns out...will report back on that tomorrow!

Patty Young had a very nice presentation featuring the new Michael Miller Knits. This lovely quilt was made with the knits! We all got to touch it...soooo soft!

She also had a video demo of 5 different ways to hem with knits...it included methods from professional to home sewing with a very old machine. I took copious notes which I will post when I get home and include a copy with every yard of knit fabric I sell.

Patty is wearing a very sweet little top and skirt she made with the knits...It looked sooo cute on her...my pic does not do it justice!

They bring all the fresh, new, bright colors of the season for us to order.

This sample set was created by LilyandEbony using 2 prints from The Rose Fairies collection by Michael Miller. Patterns for the Juliet overtop and the ruffle bottom pants are from the AllegroFabrics shop, both by Pink Fig. Contrasting fabrics from different collections pop the colors in the roses and leaves. Light pink linen pants fabric adds interest. Trims are everything from velvet ribbon to crochet edge ribbon. Starting from basic patterns, this turned out to be a unique set!

As part of our Anniversary were having designer interviews! We were so excited to interview Patty Young! Thank you So much Patty for giving us your time!!

Biography: Patty Young, Modkid

We know you're Patty Young the designer of very vibrant, colorful, versatile, and fun fabrics and that you creating some DARLING and very fun patterns for girlies as well, but…

Tell us a little about yourself what makes you, you! I think what makes me "ME" is a combination of that Latin flair in my blood (having grown up in Central America in a purely Hispanic family), that entrepreneurial spirit (which I also inherited from my hard-working and always-creative parents) and that need to be unique and different (which I have no idea where it came from, but believe me it's there! LOL!) You take all of these personality traits and throw in some chronic insomnia, addiction to caffeine and some OCD behavior and you have Patty Young. :)

What inspired you to start designing fabric? I have always loved creating repeated patterns, whether it was doodling on my notebook in school or creating a background texture for one of my many advertising and marketing jobs. I went to school for design and received my Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in 1993. I worked at a number of design-related jobs creating mostly artwork for print media. In 2005 I left my corporate job to stay at home with my children and pursue my own creative endeavors. Sewing clothes for them led to designing my own sewing patterns which led to wanting to design my own fabric to accompany these patterns. All the basic knowledge was there... I just had to apply it to a different medium: textiles!

How do you design your fabric; some designers paint, draw, design on the computer etc..? My designs are about 99% computer-generated. Every now & then I do sketch out an idea on paper if I happen to be away from my computer, but my next step is usually to scan it, bring it into Adobe Illustrator and redraw it. I make my repeated patterns using Illustrator and Photoshop depending on the complexity of the design. I prefer Photoshop for playing with color because I can have each design on a different layer and play with the opacity to create new looks and combinations.

Is there a design that you're particularly most proud of whether it be a pattern or fabric and why? Oooh, that is a hard question. It's like asking me to pick a favorite offspring... haha. Since each of my designs is original, they all were dreamt up in my head, born onto paper or computer then sculpted and tweaked to perfection. Each one goes through this process of development and sometimes even a metamorphosis of sorts. Many designs end up looking absolutely nothing like what they started out as (I can't believe how many parallels there are between my fabric designs and my kids!) I don't know if I can pick a favorite but I can tell you that my current obsession is with this design that is not currently out. It will be part of my next fabric collection, due out in May, 2010. I can't really say much about it at this point because it is still so premature but I can tell you that I have a full size print-out of it tacked to my wall above my laptop and I swear I stare at that thing all day long... it's like I'm hypnotized by it! Hopefully it'll have that effect on everyone else. ;)

Tell us a little about Flora and Fauna, your newest collection for Michael Miller? Flora & Fauna is like what I would want my dream world to look like: bright, colorful, fun and filled with beautiful flowers and whimsical creatures frolicking among a backdrop of perfectly designed geometric textures. Like I said in my first answer, I grew up in a place that I can only describe as a lush tropical paradise. Now, I live in the Midwest where it's Winter about 6 out of 12 months of the year and these colors don't naturally occur in nature... only in my head! And now in my fabric.

We know you have some new, darling Modkid patterns just released as well; tell us a little about those and how you got your inspiration for them? Yes, we have 6 new patterns that are a bit different from my previous sets. At the insistence of various people, I promised to do some fun home dec items, so now we have a Hummingbird Quilt and a Pillow Trio pattern. Also, this time I worked with a good friend of mine, Valerie Haberer, to launch a line of clothing patterns for 18" and 15" dolls. The collection comes complete with a set of garment bags for child & doll. How fun is that?! So far, all our new patterns have been very well received so you can expect to see more of this from us!

What is one piece of advice you would give to those who dream of becoming a fabric designer? I'd say first impressions are key. Have confidence in your work. Be prepared to answer any questions about your designs, your inspiration, your background, your future plans (like you're at a job interview). Show a variety of designs to prove your versatility but also make sure your unique style shows through in all of them. And last, but certainly not least, PRESENTATION. Present your designs in a unique and creative way that is also clean and organized. Have a proposed name and even a logo for your collection... this shows that you've thought this through and are serious and confident about it.

Some Quick Ideas :)...

1.
Coasters... Cute little square Coasters made from some cute fabrics..

To make some stylish (and washable) fabric coasters, simply cut eight 5" x 5" squares. Turning them inside out, sew two squares together making a little pocket. Sew the fourth edge, leaving enough of a hole to turn your squares outside in and then finish the seam. Use different colored fabrics for a fun and funky look, or use a piece of fabric that coordinates with your home colors. A stiffer textured fabric on the bottom helps reduce slipping.

You can add fringe or beads to the edges for a boutique look, or a flat button on the center for extra cup grip.

Coasters are an easy project and make a great housewarming gift.

2.
Sachets make a great gift item. Pick a breathable fabric yet sturdy fabric and choose a coordinated ribbon color. Cut your fabric into a rectangular shape. Then sew three sides (short for bottom and two long sides) leaving enough room at the top to turn under an inch to two inches (depending on your ribbon size) to make an enclosure. Fold over the top parts and stitch a seam to make a ribbon encasement. Then, you can thread with a ribbon and stuff with your favorite potpourri or dried flower mixture.

Delectable citrus colors set the stage for this delightful group!
Stylized flowers and sprightly birds capture the imagination and bring a smile to your face! The collection is nicely balanced with a multicolor large-on-small dot motif, semi-tonal tiny harlequin geo and charming small-scale stripe. A dynamite wavy plaid pattern has so much movement that it can easily be cut at any angle and still look great!
